About Us

A Lifetime of Learning Starts Here.

We know how important it is to find childcare you really trust, and a preschool that exceeds your expectations. That's why we're here. Ska:na creates an environment where children are safe, nurtured, loved and encouraged to learn.

Ska:na's quality educational programs are comprised of:

  • Well-trained, caring teachers.
  • A safe and developmentally sound environment.
  • Comprehensive curricula based on age-appropriate key learning experiences.

Our Philosophy

Children do their most important learning before the age of five. That's why, in addition to lots of love and attention, everything we do at the Ska:na Family Learning Centre involves early childhood development.

We begin with age-appropriate environments that encourage children to learn, play and explore. Books and blocks. Puppets and paper. Toys and tambourines. You name it. There are sticks for counting, seeds for planting and places for exploring. If you're a young child, you'll find an endless assortment of activities that engage your interest and stimulate your mind.

Ska:na - where your child will learn, play, and explore.

The Ska:na Family Learning Centre's curriculum approach is the High/Scope Framework designed to enhance the learning styles and learning environment of pre-school children. The Curricula used in the program is an " Active Learning" education approach. The "Active Learning" approach involves children in direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, ideas, and events. Through such self -initiated active learning experiences, children learn concepts, form ideas, and create their own symbols and abstractions. As conscious participant-observers, teachers, elders, parents and volunteers share, control and initiative with children for classroom and centre activities.

The teachers and caregivers are guided by key experiences that all children need to have as part of their intellectual/mental, physical, spiritual, emotional development. These "ingredients of active learning" assure that materials are age and culturally appropriate, that there are many opportunities for children to freely manipulate the materials; that children can make many choices, discuss their own ideas and pursue their own interests both with other children and with adults; and that children can rely on appropriate adult support to carry out ideas and to be responsible for their own efforts.

Most importantly, at the heart of every project and activity, there's a specially trained teacher and an age-appropriate curriculum to lead the way. Because children learn differently than adults. They need hands-on experiences and get-on-the-floor teachers. They need warmth and attention. They need enthusiasm and encouragement. Most of all, they need the joy and challenge of doing it themselves.

An Environment of Active Learning

There's a unique curriculum for every age level, centered around developmentally appropriate and fun activities that help children develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially.

In the classroom and on the playground, age-appropriate concepts are integrated into all aspects of play. Sometimes it's through a game. Another time it's through a song. Other times it's through exploration. By providing children with activities that match their developmental needs and abilities, learning occurs easily and naturally.

Ska:na's quality educational programs are comprised of:

  • Well-trained, caring teachers.
  • A safe and developmentally sound environment.
  • Comprehensive curricula based on age-appropriate key learning experiences.

We have programs for every age level, including infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-agers. If you look closely, you'll find that every activity, every procedure - even every toy - is designed to support the development and well-being of your child.

Our Commitment to Quality

We understand the level of trust you place in us when you enroll your child in the Ska:na Family Learning Center, and we are committed to providing the very best care and education possible.

Accreditation - Today, our sites are fully accredited by the Ministry of Community and Social Services. Though accreditation is an involved and time-consuming process, we believe it offers important assurance to parents who are making one of the most important decisions in their children's lives.
